Mucking around with wodim, k3b, or brasero isn't going to improve anything. It's got to be a hardware problem that just happened to occur when you did updates, or it's something with the kernel. There's not really anything cdrecord cannot open use scsi that it can be.
Here's a rough example of how a cd is burned. A kernel problem could affect the next two, and a hardware problem would affect the last two.

I think it's to try to fix something at a lower level. You know instead of everyone argueing about whether it's a hardware ,software or permissions issue,why not just install Nero as i suggested.
